The Foundation of a Godly Home
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,”

Chinedu sits at his dining table after another long day at work. His wife, Amara, has kept the children fed and the house in order, though her shoulders are tense with exhaustion. He feels the weight of providing for his family, but something troubles him deeper—he realizes he has been present in body but absent in spirit, offering correction without affection, rules without reason rooted in Scripture. Many Nigerian husbands face this tension: the call to lead the home clashes with cultural expectations of stern detachment. Yet Paul writes something revolutionary: husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church.
Christ’s love was sacrificial. He “gave himself for it.” This is not the cultural portrait of a man ruling by pronouncement alone; it is the portrait of a man who laid down his life for those he loved. When Chinedu reads these words, he sees that leading his home means loving it with the willingness to sacrifice—his comfort, his pride, his schedule. This love has purpose: “that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.” Christ sanctifies the church through Scripture, through truth spoken in love.
A godly home is built when the father, as the spiritual head, becomes the first student of God’s Word. In Joshua 1:8, God commanded Joshua to meditate on Scripture day and night, “that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein.” A man who daily feeds on Scripture becomes a vessel through which God’s truth flows naturally into his household. His children see not a hypocrite but a believer who wrestles with Scripture and submits to it.
The mother’s role is equally vital. Proverbs 14:1 teaches, “Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.” Her wisdom—grounded in the fear of God—shapes the character of her children and supports her husband’s spiritual leadership. When both parents are submitted to Christ, they create an atmosphere where children can see the Gospel lived out daily.
Building a godly home means choosing daily to place Christ at the centre. It means speaking truth wrapped in grace. It means forgiving as you have been forgiven. It means training children not by force alone, but by modeling repentance, humility, and faith.
Today, whether you are a parent or preparing to become one, examine your foundation. Are you building on the rock of Christ’s Word, or on the sand of culture and convenience? The Nigerian home desperately needs fathers who love like Christ and mothers who build with wisdom. Your faithfulness in this matters eternally.
Lord, help me to build my home on the foundation of Your Word and Christ’s sacrificial love.
