Your Body Is His Temple
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV)
Sister Ngozi sat in the clinic waiting room, her heart heavy with worry. The doctor had found something during routine tests—nothing life-threatening, but serious enough to demand lifestyle changes. She thought of her packed schedule: early mornings at the market, late nights preparing for church meetings, skipped meals, little rest. As she waited for the results consultation, she whispered a prayer: “Lord, why is my body failing me?” In that quiet moment, a verse came to her mind: “Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost.”
Many of us treat our bodies like borrowed vehicles we neither maintain nor respect. We push through pain, ignore warning signs, neglect sleep, and feed ourselves carelessly—all while telling ourselves we are “trusting God.” But Paul’s letter to the Corinthians reveals a profound truth: your body is not merely yours to abuse or ignore. It is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit of God.
When Paul writes “ye are not your own,” he is not being harsh. He is liberating us from the tyranny of self-destruction. You were “bought with a price”—the precious blood of Jesus Christ. That transaction means your body belongs to God. This is why glorifying Him in your body is not optional; it is an act of worship.
Trusting God with your health does not mean sitting idle and ignoring your body’s needs. Rather, it means stewarding what He has entrusted to you. In 3 John 1:2, the apostle John writes: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” God desires your wholeness. He wants you healthy enough to serve Him, strong enough to care for your family, and present enough to fulfill your calling.
Consider how you treat your possessions. You lock your door to protect your home. You maintain your car so it runs well. Yet how do you treat the one instrument through which you experience life, love, serve, and worship? Proverbs 22:3 teaches: “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.” Wisdom includes recognizing that neglecting your health invites suffering—not as God’s punishment, but as the natural consequence of poor stewardship.
Trust God by honoring the body He gave you. Rest when exhausted. Eat nourishing food. Seek medical care without fear. Exercise your body as an act of dedication. These are not worldly indulgences; they are spiritual disciplines that honor the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.
Today, examine one area where you have been negligent with your health. Commit to one concrete change—whether it is sleeping earlier, drinking more water, or scheduling that overdue medical appointment. This is trusting God not with passivity, but with active obedience.
Lord, help me see my body as You see it—as a sacred trust and temple of Your Spirit.
